Rev. Deborah Lewis
Director of Clergy Support
Deborah has served on the Mission Rivers District staff for one year, walking alongside clergy through conversation, resourcing, and pastoral care. Her work is grounded in a simple conviction: healthy clergy lead healthy congregations, and supporting pastors and their families in this beautiful and difficult calling benefits the whole church. That belief shapes everything from one-on-one check-ins by phone, email, and handwritten notes to in-person visits across the district and gatherings that tend to the whole person, from hiking and bread baking to baseball games and poetry workshops.
Deborah holds an MDiv from Candler School of Theology at Emory University and an MEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from William and Mary, where she completed an independent study focused on clergy care and care for clergy families. She worships most Sundays at Williamsburg UMC, her mother’s home church and the congregation where she was confirmed.
Get to Know Deborah
When can I reach you?
Email is always the best first step. Usual workdays are Monday, Thursday, and Friday morning.
What brings you joy outside of work?
Swimming! I love to swim long distances and in open water (lakes, rivers, ocean).
What surprises people about you?
I used to love watching soap operas!
What’s your favorite part of this work?
Seeing clergy receive the care they so readily give everyone else.
What else would you want folks to know about who you are and/or what you do?
My focus is on clergy and their families, but supporting them is the job of everyone in the church. I consult with SPRCs and I have provided info on the website for congregation members to consider how they can up their game in supporting pastors.
